History

fbch01 thumbThe First Baptist Church of Holdrege had its origin three miles west and two miles south of the city on September 5, 1880. At that time, it was felt that a church presence was needed in the growing little community, so seven people gathered in a sod schoolhouse located in the northeast corner of section 14 of Industry Township, and under the leadership of an itinerant preacher by the name of Muxlow, founded a Baptist Church. In 1884, a white frame structure was erected between 4th and 5th Avenue on the west side of Grant Street. It was the first house of worship within the township of Holdrege. It also housed the only baptistery for miles around.

fbch02 thumbIn 1907, the house of worship was no longer able to fit all of those who wished to worship, so it was torn down and what materials could be salvaged were put to use in the new facility built at 601 West Avenue. The church continued to grow in this facility requiring many renovations and additions.

It has been associated with the American Baptist Churches-USA since its inception and has joined together with a Baptist General Conference church in its past as well.
